College football's NIL and transfer portal chaos on display as nation's top receiver holds absurd ceremony

It's the fourth Saturday of October, folks. Wake up! It's another college football gameday!

The season is just over the halfway point, and the temperature has been cranked way up. We've got conference races coming down to the wire. Playoff hopefuls in must-win situations. Arch Manning might get benched? Half the top 10 teams in the country lost last weekend.

It's just chaos everywhere you look right now, which is why college football is, by far, the best sport in America.

Now, with all that being said, it's also the dumbest sport in America — mainly due to the horrible NIL and transfer portal landscape that we've all created.

And for those who don't believe me, here's Oregon State freshman star Jesse Legree — who is also one of the top receivers in the country — taking time out of his busy week of practice to hold a signing ceremony at his high school to announce ...

... that he's signing BACK with the Beavers for next season.

Take a look:

"What is the major announcement you want to make to the country?" the CBS fellas ask Legree, who is stationed at St. Francis Academy with what sounds like a big crowd on hand.

"I will be signing with the Oregon State Beavers for the 2027-2028 season," Legree, who currently plays for the OREGON STATE BEAVERS, said.

Look, college football is so broken off the field at this point, I'm not even sure where we go from here. The product on the field is excellent. It's the best show on turf right now, and that includes the NFL.

HERE'S WHY, EVEN WITH ALL ITS PROBLEMS, COLLEGE FOOTBALL IS STILL BETTER THAN THE NFL

But off the field? It's such a joke. This is so absurd, I don't even know where to begin. To channel my inner Mike Gundy:

"Where are we at in society today?!"

Holding a news conference, calling the local TV stations, and announcing to "the country" that you're ... returning to your school next season ... is everything wrong with the current college football landscape. It feels like an SNL parody.

Sadly, it's not.

And by the way, this has nothing to do with Jesse Legree, the player. He's arguably the best wide receiver in the country not named Jeremiah Smith.

The freshman currently leads the nation in receiving yards (1,040), touchdown catches (14) and yards per game (148.6). Not bad! It's only natural that folks would speculate that he's probably hitting the portal next season and going to an LSU, or Notre Dame, or Miami, or Ohio State.

I get it. And honestly, good on Legree for actually returning to Oregon State. You NEVER see kids dance with the partners they came with anymore. They're all one-and-done.

Not Legree. Good for him.

I just don't know that we needed all the theatrics that came with it.
